How to change the password?

SparkReceipt changes passwords through an emailed reset link rather than an old-password form — request one from your Profile while signed in, or from the Forgot password page if you're locked out.

SparkReceipt doesn't have an "enter your old password, then your new one" form. Every password change goes through a link emailed to you — whether you're signed in and just want a new password, or you're locked out and can't remember the old one. Both routes below end up at the same place.

If you're signed in

  1. Open your Profile from the user menu in the top-right of the web app.
  2. Find the Login methods section.
  3. On the Email & Password row, click Change password.
  4. You'll be asked to confirm: "We will send a password reset link to your address. Do you want to continue?" Click Send reset link.
  5. Check your inbox and follow the link to set a new password.

The Change password button only appears if your account has an email login. If you only ever sign in with Google or Apple, see Signing in with Google or Apple below.

You can start the same process from the mobile app under Profile → Login methods → Change password. The email is identical — and you'll set the actual new password in a browser, not in the app.

If you're locked out

Go to app.sparkreceipt.com/forgot-password, enter your email address, and click Send reset link. In the mobile app, the Forgot password? link on the login screen opens the same page in your browser.

You'll always see a "Check your email" confirmation — even if no account exists for the address you typed. This is deliberate: it stops anyone from using the form to discover which email addresses have SparkReceipt accounts. It also means that if the email never arrives, the most likely reason is that the address you entered isn't the one your account uses. See What is my email address associated with my account? to check which address that is.

Setting the new password

The reset link opens a page where you enter your new password twice.

  • Minimum 12 characters, up to a maximum of 72.
  • There are no complexity requirements — no forced mix of uppercase, digits, or symbols. A long passphrase is both easier to remember and stronger than a short complicated one.

A few things worth knowing about the link itself:

  • It expires after 24 hours. Request a fresh one if it's gone stale.
  • It works once. Requesting a new link also invalidates any earlier one, so if you clicked "send" twice, use the most recent email.
  • You're signed in automatically once the reset completes.
  • You're signed out everywhere else. Changing your password ends every other active session, on every device. That's what you want if you're changing it because you suspect someone else has access — but it does mean signing back in on your phone.

Signing in with Google or Apple

If you created your account with Sign in with Google or Sign in with Apple, you don't have a password at all — and you don't need one, since your sign-in goes through Google or Apple.

You can still add a password if you want a second way in. Go to app.sparkreceipt.com/forgot-password and enter the exact email address tied to your Google or Apple account. SparkReceipt will create an email login for you and send a link to set a password. After that you can sign in either way.

The catch is that the address has to match the one your account was created with:

  • Sign in with Apple + Hide My Email. If Apple created a private relay alias for you (something@privaterelay.appleid.com), that alias is what your account uses — not your personal address. Entering your personal address on the Forgot password page will look like it worked ("Check your email") but no email is sent, because nothing matched. Enter the relay address instead; Apple forwards it to your real inbox, as long as forwarding is still turned on. See How to find the Apple private relay email linked to your SparkReceipt account.
  • Sign in with Google. Use the Google address you signed up with.

If your Apple account uses a hidden address, your Profile will also show a Contact email missing warning with an Add email button — that's the one place in the app where you set a password directly, without an emailed link.
