SparkReceipt lets you choose, per notification type, whether you receive it by Email, by Push (mobile), or not at all. You manage these from the Notification preferences screen, which is available in both the web app and the mobile app. Your choices are stored on your account, so a change you make on one device applies everywhere you're signed in.
Where to find notification preferences
The two channels you can toggle are labelled Email and Push, and they are independent for every notification — you can keep email on and push off for one event and the reverse for another.
Web app
- Open Account settings from the left sidebar.
- Select Notification preferences.
The page is titled Notification preferences with the subtitle "Manage how and when you receive notifications from SparkReceipt." Each notification is listed under its category with an Email and a Push switch.
Mobile app (iOS and Android)
- Open the Profile tab.
- Tap Notifications.
The Notifications screen has a Push notifications section (where you enable device-level push — see below) and a Notification preferences section that lists every notification with its Email and Push toggles, exactly like the web app.
Because both apps read and write the same account-level settings, the list of notifications and your on/off choices stay in sync between web and mobile.
Email vs. Push — how the two channels work
- Email notifications are sent to your account email address and work regardless of whether you have the mobile app installed.
- Push notifications are delivered to the SparkReceipt mobile app. For push to reach you, the app must also have operating-system-level notifications enabled for SparkReceipt. Turning the Push switch on in Notification preferences is not enough on its own if the OS is blocking notifications for the app.
Enabling push on your device
The web app's help text walks you through enabling push on your phone:
- Open the SparkReceipt mobile app.
- Go to the Profile tab.
- Scroll down to find the Push notifications section.
- Press the Enable notifications button.
- Allow notifications when prompted, then test again using Send test notification.
If the Enable notifications button is already disabled, notifications are blocked at the OS level. Turn them on in your device settings: Settings → Apps → SparkReceipt → Notifications → Allow notifications.
You can confirm push is working with the Send test notification button on the Notification preferences screen (both web and mobile).
Notification categories
Notifications are grouped into categories so related alerts sit together:
- Documents & processing
- Summaries & reminders
- Comments
- Support
- Account & billing
The first four are the most commonly used categories; Account & billing appears when there are billing-related notifications to show (see the table further down).
The main notifications
These are the notifications most people interact with. The web and mobile apps use slightly different wording for two of the titles — both are listed below so you can find the right row on either platform.
| Notification (web / mobile title) | What it is and when it fires | Default Email | Default Push | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Email document processed (web) / Email receipt processed (mobile) | Fires when a receipt or document you forwarded to your SparkReceipt email address finishes processing. Also covers duplicate-detection alerts when the forwarded receipt looks like one you already have. | On | Off | Documents & processing |
| Daily reminder | A scheduled nudge to upload your receipts, sent on weekdays at the time you choose (defaults to 16:30 in your local time). Use the Remind me at field on this row to change the time. | Off | On | Summaries & reminders |
| Document comment activity | Fires when a new comment is added to a document you own, are mentioned in, or have previously commented on. | On | On | Comments |
| Support reply | Fires when a support agent replies to one of your support requests. | On | On | Support |
| Support request status update | Fires when the status of one of your support requests changes (for example, from Pending to In progress). | On | On | Support |
About "Email document processed" / "Email receipt processed"
This notification has a few specifics worth knowing:
- It fires only for receipts forwarded by email to your SparkReceipt address. Receipts you upload directly in the app (camera or file picker) do not trigger it.
- Background inbox scanning (a connected Gmail/IMAP mailbox importing a backlog of old emails) is processed in batches and does not send this per-receipt alert — those have their own notifications (see below).
- There is a per-user daily cap on these emails (100 per day). If you forward an unusually high volume in a single day, SparkReceipt stops sending the processed-confirmation past that limit to avoid flooding your inbox.
Other notifications you may see
Depending on the features you use, additional notifications can appear in the list. Most live under Documents & processing; billing alerts live under Account & billing. The inbox-scanning notifications only appear once you've connected a mailbox for automatic email scanning (see Automatic email scanning).
| Notification (mobile title) | What it is and when it fires | Default Email | Default Push |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email scanning failed | A connected mailbox's automatic scanning hits an error. | On | On |
| Emails pending approval | Scanned emails are waiting for your approval before becoming documents (only when approval is required on that source). | On | On |
| Email backlog processed | Approved scanned emails have been turned into documents. | On | Off |
| Bank statement extraction completed | A bank statement has finished processing and its transactions are extracted. | On | On |
| Email inbox disconnected | A connected inbox (Gmail, Microsoft, or IMAP) has disconnected and needs to be re-authorized so scanning can resume. | On | Off |
| Payment failed | Your payment method was declined. | On | On |
| Subscription expiring | A follow-up reminder that your subscription is about to expire after a failed payment. | On | On |
On the web app, a few of these less common notifications appear with a more technical label than the mobile wording above, but they sit in the same category and behave identically.
Changing a setting
To change any notification, flip its Email or Push switch. The change saves immediately — there is no separate "Save" button — and applies across the web and mobile apps because the setting lives on your account.
Example: stop getting an email every time an emailed receipt is processed
If a confirmation email for every forwarded receipt is too much, turn off just the email channel for that one event and keep everything else as-is:
- Open Notification preferences (web: Account settings → Notification preferences; mobile: Profile → Notifications).
- Find the Email document processed row (it's called Email receipt processed in the mobile app), under Documents & processing.
- Turn off the Email switch on that row. Leave its Push switch however you prefer.
You'll stop receiving the per-receipt confirmation emails while every other notification keeps working as before.
Restoring defaults
If you've changed several settings and want to start over, use the Restore defaults button on the Notification preferences screen (available on both web and mobile). This resets every notification back to its original Email and Push values. On the web app you'll be asked to confirm before the reset is applied.
