Can SparkReceipt handle different international tax formats (e.g., Canadian GST/PST)?

SparkReceipt recognizes common international tax formats — including VAT, Canadian GST/PST/HST, and single-rate sales taxes — and can split a receipt's tax into multiple lines automatically.

Yes. SparkReceipt is built to handle multiple tax systems out of the box. When a receipt is scanned, it tries to identify the tax labels on the receipt and split the total tax into the correct components.

Tax systems recognized

  • VAT (EU, UK, and similar value-added tax regions)
  • Canadian GST, PST, and HST, including the combined GST + PST used in provinces like British Columbia and Quebec, and HST used in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces
  • Single-rate sales tax for regions that don't use VAT or GST/PST

For Canadian receipts, SparkReceipt will look at the province on the receipt and try to apply the right system automatically — for example, splitting a single tax total into separate GST and PST lines where applicable.

Reviewing and adjusting the breakdown

Each document opens a tax editor where you can review the detected tax lines and adjust the rates, amounts, or labels if the receipt was ambiguous. You can also define your own named tax rates under Tax rates in account settings so they're available as quick picks when editing future documents.
