I can't log in, or SparkReceipt won't load. What should I check?

Steps for when the SparkReceipt mobile app or web app won't let you log in or won't load, including what each login error means and how to tell whether SparkReceipt itself is down.

Most login problems come down to the login method or email address, a password that needs resetting, or old data stored in the app or browser. Work through the checks below. Your documents are stored in your SparkReceipt account, so none of these steps deletes them.

1. Use the same login method and email as before

SparkReceipt treats each login as its own account. If you signed up with Sign in with Google, use Google again. If you used Sign in with Apple, use Apple. If you used an email address and password, use that same address. Logging in with a different method or email can open a new, empty account, which looks as if your receipts are gone.

See What is my email address associated with my account? and, for Apple's Hide My Email addresses, How to find the Apple private relay email linked to your SparkReceipt account.

2. What the error message means

MessageWhat to do
Username or password was invalid. (web) or Invalid email or password (mobile)Check the email address, then reset the password with Forgot password? See How to change the password?
Too many login attempts. Wait a moment and try again. (web)Wait a minute or two before trying again. The mobile app shows Login failed in this case.
An account already uses this email. Sign in with your email and password, then verify your email…Log in with email and password, verify your email, then Google or Apple sign-in works. See How do I verify my email?
Google hasn't verified the email address on this Google account yet… (mobile) or The email address on that account isn't verified… (web)Verify the address with Google or Apple, or log in with email and password.
Login failed or We couldn't log you in right now…Check your internet connection and try again in a moment.

3. In the mobile app

  • Update the app. Install the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
  • "Connection Problem" screen. Tap Try Again. If it keeps coming back, tap Logout on the same screen and log in again.
  • The app opened without asking you to log in. The app can start before you have an account. Open the side menu and tap Log in to sign in to your existing account. When you log in, you can choose whether to move the scans you made on this phone into that account.
  • Try the web app. Log in at app.sparkreceipt.com with the same details. If that works, the problem is on the phone. Logging out and back in, or reinstalling the app, usually fixes it. Receipts you photographed but that haven't uploaded yet live only on that phone, so let them finish uploading before you reinstall.

4. In the web browser

Is SparkReceipt down?

SparkReceipt doesn't have a public status page. To tell whether the problem is on your side:

  • Open app.sparkreceipt.com on another device or another network, for example your phone on mobile data.
  • If the mobile app works but the web app doesn't (or the other way round), the service is up and the problem is with that app or browser. Go through the steps above.
  • If nothing loads anywhere, email support@sparkreceipt.com. Email reaches us even when the app is unavailable.

Still stuck?

Email support@sparkreceipt.com from the address you use with SparkReceipt. Tell us how you usually log in (Google, Apple or email), which device and app you're using, and the exact error message. A screenshot helps.
